Who is Elizabeth Wong?

You may refer to the information recorded here, here, here and here. To make things short, she’s one of the politician in Malaysia which caught on tape by her boyfriend. The MMS video has been spread-out vivaciously.

Elizabeth Wong is the Bukit Lanjan assemblywoman and Selangor executive council member in charge of Tourism, Consumer Affairs, and Environment, who is in the Parti Keadilan Rakyat party.

Wong entered the electoral arena as a candidate under the People’s Justice Party (or Parti Keadilan Rakyat – PKR) during the 13th General Elections and on March 8, 2008, Wong created an upset by defeating the incumbent and was elected as the new Selangor State Assemblyman for Bukit Lanjan with a majority of over 5000, the second largest majority won by PKR state assembly candidates in Selangor.

Wong is well-known as a prominent human rights activist and was involved in activist environmental campaigns. Since assuming office, she won over critics of Pakatan Rakyat (People’s Alliance) for being a straight-talking, pro-environment and incorruptible politician. Wong is said to be one of the better performing executive council members in Pakatan Rakyat states and a rising star.

On 17 February 2009, Wong offered her resignation when semi-nude photographs were circulated to the public media, allegedly by her ex-boyfriend. She was advised to go on leave over this traumatic affair. The public outcry against the invasion of Wong’s privacy was unprecedented, which saw the usually staid public media rooting for her; women’s and human rights NGOs with her constituents collected more than 10,000 signatures within 24 hours, urging the Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Dato’ Abdul Khalid Ibrahim to reject her resignation. The Sultan of Selangor released a media statement expressing His Majesty’s sadness at Wong’s debacle and expressed his concern over the invasion of her privacy, but left the fate of Wong to the Menteri Besar. During the March 2009 sitting of the Selangor state assembly, which Wong was granted leave by the Speaker, the Opposition, Barisan Nasional joined her colleagues in urging Wong to retract her resignation.

She was filmed by her boyfriend when she was taking off his clothes while the music is playing on the background. Her boyfriend circulated the MMS because she refused to marry him. This is not the first case of its kind. It is happening in the India over the last few years.

In 2004, a boy of class 12 of DPS shot his intimate relations with his girl friend and circulated among his friends. Both students were expelled from the school. The girl was sent abroad by her family and the boy got admission in another school after getting bail in the case. The staggering fact of this case was that both were minors.

In 2006, a girl student in Aurangabad College returned to her home in Shillong, when her MMS became the topic of discussion in college campus.

Singapore HDB flat staircase MMS is one of the latest after the famous Sun Tan case. This unknown girl doesn’t look like a Chinese. Certainly she learned it from Sun Tan but did not make the same mistake of revealing herself like Sun Tan.

As for Sun Tan, here is what GutterUncensored had to say:

“Sun Tan is not a bad person, she is just a young woman that was trying to make her boyfriend happy. And in doing so she made a huge mistake. All the attention is oriented towards Sun Tan but a lot of the blame should go the boyfriend. This situation is very common today, its usually the boyfriend who talk his girlfriend into taking “unwanted” pictures and into making videos. Just as in the Edison Chen Hong Kong case, it is the boyfriend behind the whole thing. The boyfriend made his lover or lovers in Edison s case pose while he take photos and video. And just as in Edison Chen case, it is the boyfriend that is reported to have lost or leaked the pictures.”

Too many young women are easy talked in doing things they would not normally do with a persuasive boyfriend. One can be almost sure that this thing was not her idea but rather her boyfriend. All the attention is going to the girl for obvious reasons but some of the attention should be allocated for the guy in the pictures and video with Sun Tan. He is more likely than not to be blamed.

We can only wish the best for Sun Tan, the story will blow over in a week or two and she will continue with her life with a lesson well learned. And other young women in Singapore will hopefully take a lesson from this whole episode.
